Any signs of serious eye problems\u00a0often serve as wake up call for you to better manage your disease.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking of your eye like a camera, the \u201cfilm\u201d of the eye is called the retina. The macula is the center of\u00a0the retina. \u00a0This critical structure can get damaged if your diabetes is not under good control for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<div class='two_third'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<ul style=\"list-style: disc; padding-left: 32px; color: #000000;\">\n<li>If you run high levels of sugar in your system, the sugar is eventually broken down into a number of substances that are bad for your body. Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF\u2019s) production is triggered by high blood sugar. VEGF can damage the very small blood vessels of your body called capillaries.<\/li>\n<li>Two things are bad for capillaries.\u00a0One thing that can happen is that the capillary wall can become leaky.\u00a0 VEGF damage the\u00a0capillary wall\u00a0and then the capillaries leak fluid into the retina. The retinal does not function as well when it is \u201cwet\u201d so vision inevitably declines. This is called\u00a0macular edema.\u00a0The other scenario is that the capillaries and close off, this is called ischemia and can also worsen the vision significantly.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='one_third et_column_last'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/midnortheyecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/background_diabetic_retinopathy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-557\" src=\"https:\/\/midnortheyecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/background_diabetic_retinopathy-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"background_diabetic_retinopathy\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><strong>Diabetic Macular Edema<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='clear'><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class='two_third'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<ul style=\"list-style: disc; padding-left: 32px; color: #000000;\">\n<li>Capillary non-perfusion in the retinal elicits the formation of a substance called vascular endothelial growth factor. (VEGF). The VEGF signals to the retinal to produce new abnormal blood vessels. The new vessels are very delicate and may appear on the optic nerve (NVD, neovascularization of the disk) or in the retinal periphery (neovascularization of the peripheral retina).<\/li>\n<li>The fragile new vessels may bleed into the vitreous, a clear, gel-like substance that fills the center of the eye. It may take days, months, or even years to resorb the blood, depending on the amount of blood present.
